Sakura Concert Series

Funded by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage as part of a two-year project to build Black-Asian solidarity through cultural programming, the Sakura Concert Series took place as part of the 2022 Cherry Blossom Festival. In an effort to deepen shared appreciation and knowledge of each other’s communities, the Sakura Concert Series explored the intersections of Japanese, Japanese American, and African American music cultures. Over two evenings and one full day, the concert series showcased more than two dozen performers from traditional to contemporary, through a range of musical performances by multi-ethnic Hip Hop, Jazz, and Percussion musicians.

The Sakura Concert Series featured over two dozen performers and attracted an audience of approximately 25,000 over the three day event. The event succeeded in attracting a more diverse audience, representative of the local neighborhood and other West Philly residents.
